We have all the social safety nets in place that are similar to yours in the U.K.. I am a single father of two small ones. I receive a lot of support from our fed, state and local governments. Here they call it workfare. You have to get working from the jump. I am employed. So I receive childcare assistance for after school, school breakfast and lunch program, small amount of food benefits, and NY state funded health care. I appreciate every ounce of support I receive. The only sticky point in my situation is if I earn approximately .75cents an hour more, then I would lose most of my benefits which amounts to around three times more than what I would gain from accepting a raise or transferring to another position. So there isn't much incentive for me to elevate my self financially until my children are old enough to watch themselves after school or the raise was comparable to my loss of benefits.
References :
"What is the attitude to single parents there? Are you frowned on or praised?" It depends, I'm an African American single Dad. It is much harder for all men but especially Afro-American Men to get adequate housing, stated aided funding, and JAH forbid you have to go to court. If you're a man in the State of California and you're on Child Support you might as well put on your chains and shackles for 18 years cause they have no mercy on single parenting men in this state. You're looked down on a lot, and it is really sad because there are a lot of single Dad's who are really being there for they're kids, we cant all be branded as the "Deadbeat" because of the mishaps of the majority.
